John's
Journey

A 50-year-old CEO's publicly documented transformation from a 5:13 marathon to a Boston Qualifier โ€” tracked across 4 phases, 12 months, guided by world-class coaching and Rebel Health's integrated medical team.

Why This Is Unreasonable

John Goldman, founder of Rebel Health Alliance, ran his first marathon in December 2025 โ€” finishing in 5 hours and 13 minutes at 245 lbs. Most people would call it a personal achievement and move on. John looked at the clock and asked a different question.

"What if I could qualify for Boston within a year โ€” at 50 years old?"

โ€” John Goldman, December 2025

For a 50-year-old man, the Boston qualifying time is approximately 3:25:00 โ€” nearly 1 hour and 48 minutes faster than his first finish. That's not a small improvement. That's a complete physiological transformation.

He enlisted physiologist and ultra-endurance coach Alan Couzens โ€” the architect behind multiple world-class ultra-endurance athletes โ€” to design the training plan. And he committed to documenting every data point publicly, in real time, on X and Instagram.

This is Project Unreasonable. Not a fitness journey. Not a motivational story. The science of doing what shouldn't be possible โ€” with precision medicine, structured coaching, and full transparency.

Origin Story

Now โ€“ March 15, 2026

This is where the project is declared, framed, and structurally built. The baseline is established, the stakes are clarified, and the system behind the ambition is introduced to the world.

Phase 1 isn't about dramatic transformation โ€” it's about architecture. Building the medical team, establishing the coaching structure, setting the data collection systems, and making the public commitment undeniable.

It answers the fundamental question: why is this unreasonable, and why does that make it worth doing?

What's Happening
  • Medical baseline fully established
  • Coaching plan locked with Alan Couzens
  • Weekly long runs building to 12+ miles
  • Weekly mileage hitting 41+ mi/week
  • Body composition shifting rapidly
Key Milestones
  • -27 lbs in first 4 months
  • VOโ‚‚ Max reached ~50 (top 10% age group)
  • A1C 5.0 โ€” optimal glycemic control
  • Cardiac efficiency improved 14%
  • 680% mileage increase since Oct

Proof of Work

March 15 โ€“ May 31, 2026

The narrative shifts from intention to measurable change. Data, training blocks, and physiological adjustments begin compounding publicly. No more declaring the goal โ€” this is where it's proven possible.

Speed work begins. The aerobic base built in Phase 1 becomes the foundation for pace development. Sub-9:00/mi runs appear for the first time. The community watches John cross thresholds that seemed impossible at the start.

Training Focus
  • Introduction of tempo and interval runs
  • Mileage sustained 50+ mi/week
  • Race-specific long runs begin
  • VOโ‚‚ Max work with coach guidance
Targets
  • Weight: ~210 lbs by May 31
  • Pace: approach 9:00โ€“9:30/mi avg
  • Half marathon time trial planned
  • Blood work recheck at Phase midpoint

The Crucible

June 1 โ€“ July 31, 2026

Every serious pursuit encounters resistance. This is where endurance, discipline, and structure are tested โ€” physically, mentally, and narratively. Heat, fatigue, doubt. These are the elements that break most people.

But this phase is also where the data compounds most dramatically. Two months of sustained intensity, race-specific workouts, and the visible gap between where John started and where he's going becomes undeniable.

Training Focus
  • Threshold + marathon-pace long runs
  • Heat adaptation training
  • 55โ€“65 mi/week peak mileage
  • Full diagnostics retest at midpoint
Targets
  • Weight: ~200 lbs by July 31
  • Sustained 8:30/mi at aerobic effort
  • Marathon simulation run attempted
  • CAC + full biomarker recheck

The Ascent

August 1 โ€“ November 7, 2026

With race day approaching, tension rises and focus sharpens. Training intensity peaks, milestones matter more, and the story transitions from steady progress to culmination. This is where everything earned in the first three phases gets tested on one day.

The taper. The strategy. The race. On November 7th, 2026, John Goldman either crosses the finish line in under 3:25:00 โ€” or he learns what the next unreasonable pursuit looks like. Either way, it will have been worth it.

Training Focus
  • Race-specific long runs at 7:50 pace
  • Taper week begins 3 weeks before race
  • Final full diagnostics panel
  • Race day strategy finalized with coach
Race Day Targets
  • Weight: 190 lbs at start line
  • Race pace: 7:50/mi sustained
