There is no single age at which your body fully develops. It finishes one system at a time over roughly fifteen years, from the end of height growth in the late teens to peak bone mass around 30. The brain is the last major organ to mature, and it is the one people are most surprised by.
The reason this matters past your 20s: each system's peak is also the point it starts declining from. What you build by 30 is the balance you spend for the next fifty years.

Growth plates, the cartilage zones at the ends of the long bones, close under the influence of estrogen in both sexes. Girls usually stop growing one to two years after their first period, around 14 to 16. Boys, whose puberty starts later, typically stop around 16 to 18, with a few adding a centimeter into their early 20s. Once the plates close, no training, supplement, or hormone makes you taller.
Nitin Gogtay and colleagues at the National Institute of Mental Health mapped cortical development with repeated MRI scans and published the sequence in PNAS in 2004. The sensory and motor regions mature first, in childhood. The prefrontal cortex, which handles planning, weighing consequences, and impulse control, was the last region to finish and was still maturing at 21, where their scans stopped. Later imaging work puts the finish in the mid 20s. That is the biological reason a 19-year-old and a 26-year-old can have the same IQ and very different decision-making.
Cognitive abilities then peak at different times, per Hartshorne and Germine's 2015 study of 48,537 people in Psychological Science. Processing speed peaks around 20. Working memory peaks in the late 20s to early 30s. Vocabulary and accumulated knowledge keep rising into the 60s and 70s. So "fully developed" is not the same as "at its best."
Natural muscle mass and strength are highest in the late 20s to mid 30s, then decline at roughly 3 to 8% per decade (Volpi 2004), faster after 60. The peak is not fixed. A person who trains through their 20s reaches a higher peak, and trials in older adults consistently show that strength training raises mass and strength at any age, including past 80. The ability to build muscle does not go away. You lose the free muscle that youth gave you.
Aerobic capacity peaks in the early to mid 20s and falls about 10% per decade after 30 in people who do not train, more slowly in people who do. A 2018 study in JAMA Network Open of more than 122,000 patients found that low cardiorespiratory fitness carried a mortality risk as large as or larger than smoking, diabetes, or heart disease. The skeleton adds density through the teens and 20s and reaches peak bone mass around 25 to 30, according to the National Institutes of Health. After that, bone is maintained and then slowly lost, with women losing fastest in the years around menopause. Peak bone mass is the bank balance. Genetics explains roughly 60 to 80% of the difference in peak bone mass between people, per the Surgeon General's report on bone health; the rest is calcium, vitamin D, protein, and, above all, load.; the rest is calcium, vitamin D, protein, and, above all, load. Weight-bearing exercise and resistance training in the teens and 20s raise the peak. Very low body weight, smoking, and prolonged low estrogen in young women lower it. Bone density lost in your 20s to an eating disorder or to years of missed periods is only partly recoverable, which is why either one is a reason to see a physician now rather than a thing to wait out.
Testosterone in men peaks in the late teens to late 20s and then declines about 1% per year from the 30s, with free testosterone falling closer to 2% a year, per the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (Harman 2001). Estrogen in women is stable through the reproductive years, becomes irregular in perimenopause, often beginning in the early 40s, and falls at menopause, average age 51. Growth hormone output peaks in adolescence and declines steadily through adulthood.
The thymus, where new T cells mature, is largest in the teens and begins shrinking in the 20s. By 50 it has lost most of its active tissue. This is one reason vaccine responses weaken and infections linger with age, and the loss is steady: the thymus gives up roughly 3% of its working tissue a year through middle age.
Every curve above has the same shape: rise, plateau, decline. The height of the plateau and the slope of the decline are both partly under your control, and the control is largest early. Someone who reaches 30 with high bone density, high VO2 max, and solid muscle mass has a decades-long buffer before any of those numbers reach a threshold that limits life. Someone who reaches 30 sedentary starts the decline from a lower peak. If you are 45 and reading this, the question is not what your peak was. It is where you are on each curve today, and a measurement answers that in one visit.
None of this is fixed. Bone, muscle, and aerobic capacity all respond to training at every age. But the arithmetic favors starting early, and the standard advice to "worry about that in your 50s" gets the order backwards. We do not have member data on bone density or VO2 max curves to show you.
